Ingredients & Alternatives for this Sandwich:
Bread Choice: Feel free to use your favorite bread. A simple artisan white bread, crusty ciabatta, or sourdough works beautifully with this recipe.
Cheese Options: Swiss cheese adds a nice creamy balance, but you can also use goat cheese or mozzarella cheese which will make a slightly different yet delicious flavor.
Fig Preserves: You need fig preserves or fig jam for this sandwich.
Basil Leaves: Fresh basil adds a fragrant, peppery note to this sandwich.
Prosciutto: You need some good quality Prosciutto which is dry-cured ham for this recipe.
Mixed Greens: I used a handful of the “mixed green spring mix” which consisted of arugula, red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce, and mizuna. You can just use arugula if you don’t have all of those.
Instructions required for Prosciutto Sandwich:
1. Make the Fig Dressing
In a small bowl, mix the fig preserves and fresh lemon juice to create a sweet and tangy dressing. Set it aside for later.
2. Toast the Bread
Drizzle olive oil on a hot pan (I use a stainless steel pan) and toast the first slice of bread. While you’re toasting the second slice, flip it once the first side is golden brown. Place both the slices of Swiss cheese on the toasted side, cover the pan, and let the cheese melt as the other side toasts.
3. Assemble the Sandwich
On the slice of bread with the melted cheese, layer the mixed greens, drizzle with the fig dressing, and place the prosciutto on top. Season with a pinch of salt and black pepper, and add fresh basil leaves for a burst of flavor. Spread the remaining fig sauce on the second slice of bread.
4. Finish and Serve
Close the sandwich by pressing the two slices of bread together. Slice in half if you like, and enjoy!
Equipment & Ingredients I use:
Basil Prosciutto Sandwich
Ingredients
- 2 slices bread
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 slices swiss cheese
- 1 handful mixed greens
- 1 heaping tablespoon fig preserves
- 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
- 3 slices prosciutto
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 5 to 6 fresh basil leaves
Instructions
- For the dressing or sauce, mix the fig preserves and lemon juice, and set it aside.
- Toast a slice of bread with olive oil in a pan. While toasting the second slice, after one side is toasted, flip the bread so the untoasted side is down. Place the two slices of cheese on the toasted side, cover the pan, and let the cheese melt.
- Add mixed greens to the toast with melted cheese, drizzle with the fig sauce, and top with prosciutto. Spread the remaining fig sauce on the second slice of toast.
- Close the sandwich by pressing the two slices together.

Notes
- Prosciutto is delicate and can tear easily, so when adding it to your sandwich, gently fold the slices rather than laying them flat. This creates a more layered texture and helps distribute its salty, savory flavor evenly throughout the sandwich.
